Methodology

Induction

To introduce participants to the broad range of issues involved in the regeneration of Independent Quarry, using a variety of methods including:

  • a briefing pack
  • a cumulative exhibition that tracks project progress
  • a Landscape & Art Network seminar at the start of the project
  • a programme of quarry walks, talks and illustrated presentations to explain:
    • geological and ecological issues
    • geomorphology
    • quarrying/industrial archaeology

Creative Design Workshops

The workshops will be designed to maximise the knowledge and skills of participants from all sectors. They will be open to the community and all other participating sectors, and co-ordinated by PSQT and the Project Manager, and run by UOB facilitators (one or other of the researchers from UOB), working alongside the project artists. Workshops will be under the following themes:

  1. Conservation and enhancement of geological features - to examine innovation in site specific design for conserving, interpreting and enhancing the quarry's geological features.
  2. The Landform. Exploring the site's natural properties and the creative potential of on site materials such as quarry by-products, to create additional features that encourage natural regeneration by flora and fauna.
  3. The Amphitheatre. Looking at the potential for a multi-use performance space in the landform.
  4. The Labyrinth/Maze. Exploring these as additional features to the landform using several creative techniques.

Workshops 3 and 4 are elements that have already been identified through consultation with the community.

Exhibition and documentation

The exhibition will build throughout the project, presenting the broader picture and the experience of the quarry landscape from a variety of perspectives. This will inform the final shape of the quarry Masterplan which will show land forms and features that are additional to the regeneration design by Albion Stone Quarries and the project's relationship to the World Heritage Coast.

The progress and outcomes of each project strand will be documented. The project's objectives and participants responses will be used when evaluating the project. Documentation will be displayed in the Drill Hall and also via e mail for reaction and comment by all participants.

Masterplan for features and implementation

The master plan will be drawn to planning application standard D/E and incorporate the work of the design workshops and other project strands. The development of a master plan will detail features that are additional to Albion Stone Quarries scheme and ASQ will enable some aspects of land-forms and features to be constructed during the last 6 months of the programme, with access to the use of heavy plant on site.
